A 15 years old British school girl Rebecca Rickwood has won a global competition to find the best user of Microsoft’s Excel 2007.

Rebecca, who is 15, was one of 228,000 competitors from 57 countries. She beat 78 students in the final round. Competitors were required to perform timed tests to demonstrate their skill at making spreadsheets. Rebecca was presented with her $5000 prize last week at a ceremony in San Diego, California.

Competitors performed timed tests to demonstrate their skill at making spreadsheets, reports the BBC, and Rebecca Rickwood, 15, clinched the $5,000 (around £3,000) prize in the Excel 2007 category of the Microsoft Office World Championships without making a single mistake.

She said: “I heard my name read out in first place and I just couldn’t believe it. I’m ecstatic, I just can’t believe I won and now I’m world champion. It’s a day I’ll never forget.”

Gmail Calling Now Supports Multiple Calls and Call Waiting

Remember those old multi-line phones with all the buttons across the bottom? They gave you access to more than one line at a time, a feature now available in Google‘s Gmail.

According to the official Gmail Blog, this new multi-call capability

will let you put callers on hold with Gmail’s phone service, picking

up another call at the same time. Too bad there’s no music on

hold to entertain that first caller.

Whether you make a second call or not, you can now put any call on

hold — useful in case you need to talk to someone in the room or grab something off the stove. Just press the “Hold” button and

then “Resume” to start talking again.

This feature works across all call types (voice, video, and phone); the only restriction is that a maximum of two outgoing calls to

physical phones can be placed at once.

Best of all, U.S. and Canada calls using the Gmail phone and video system will be free through 2011, and all these new

multi-line features work with Gmail’s phone, voice and video calls.

Nokia, Siemens stumble in latest telecom venture hurdle

Nokia and Siemens are moving to restructure a joint venture in telecommunications networking equipment after failing to acquire a controlling stake in it.

Telecom giant Nokia and conglomerate Siemens are moving to restructure a joint venture in telecom networking equipment after failing to acquire a controlling stake in it.

The Wall Street Journal reports that four-year-old Nokia Siemens Networks, which is unprofitable and lost almost $1 billion last year, may instead require the infusion of more cash by both companies.

A quick play-by-play:
One private-equity group, which included Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. and TPG Capital, dropped out of the auction awhile back.

Attempts to sell a controlling stake to a consortium that includes Gores Group and Platinum Equity are stalling.

Nokia Siemens seems wary of striking a deal because the latter firms are known for investing in distressed assets.

It’s an even 50-50 split in the venture between Nokia and Siemens, but the former has four of the seven board seats.

The issue? The $3 billion business has been an albatross on Nokia’s back for the better part of a year, adding to its known smartphone woes. Despite solid revenue figures for three straight quarters, the venture has posted significant operating losses – €686 million last year, €1.6 billion the year prior.

It’s also facing considerable competition from Ericsson. Meanwhile, an impatient Siemens is waiting in the wings and could very well take control of the venture to get things moving.

India starts blocking file storage websites in a move against piracy

Widely used file storage websites such as Megaupload, Rapidshare, Mediafire and Putlocker are being reported as blocked by users in India.

File storage websites such as Megaupload, Putlocker, Rapidshare are being blocked in India.
A thread started on a popular online forum focused on developments in Indian broadband has furious and surprised users sharing a list of websites blocked by their Internet service providers. Going through the thread and my Twitter interactions, India’s Department of Telecommunication is behind the block.
Some users say they are not able to browse the file uploading websites, others say they can access and download content. A screenshot shared by Sunny Chahal on Twitter confirms that the block is in effect. Some other users are seeing the same notice. The error message:

Users of popular Internet Service Providers MTNL, BSNL
and Airtel have confirmed seeing the same error while visiting some or all of the following websites:

Megaupload.com
Mediafire.com
Megavideo.com
VideoBB.com
Novamov.com
Movshare.net
Rapidshare.com
Putlocker.com
Hotfile.com
Fileserve.com
Filesonic.com
Filesonic.in
Depositfiles.com
Wupload.com
The decision behind banning the websites looks like piracy. Most of these websites are widely used to  share content production houses and record labels would want users to pay for. Users are comparing the ban to Internet rules in China. The Department of Homeland Security in the US also made definitive moves against piracy by seizing domains of websites hosting pirated content.

As of now there is no official word from the DoT, the story will be updated as we get more
